LodenTal

The Loden

Loden began in the Alps as a cloth for the cold, rain and wind.

Woven from wool, then fulled with water, its fibres tighten into a dense, warm and naturally weather-resistant cloth.

For centuries it was worn because it worked.

Traditionally green, grey or brown, today we use it in a much wider range of colours.

Our loden comes from Leichtfried in Austria, where it has been made since 1884.

A fabric that began with a purpose. We like to keep it that way.

When LodenTal began in 2012, I had no idea where it would lead.
I’m still surprised to find myself here, almost fifteen years later, holding on to the same idea.

In the meantime, fashion has changed.
It has become faster and, as we increasingly see, attention has shifted towards the brands owned by large groups, with resources very different from those of an independent company.
For a while, we tried to follow that model too: seasons, trade shows, distribution, appointments.
I thought it was the necessary path for the brand to grow.
Then I realised that trying to adapt to that system was taking us away from the very thing that made LodenTal different.
We’ve moved away from distribution and returned to tailoring, to a direct relationship with the client and to made-to-order garments with personalised colours, measurements and details.

Throughout this transition, Alfonso, LodenTal’s irreplaceable Product Director, has been fundamental.
His professionalism, determination and constant presence have allowed us to move forward without losing sight of the idea we started with.

From then on, the direction became clear: not stores, but people.
Not big numbers, but relationships.
What followed was a generosity I could never have anticipated.
Frank and Kristina, Alba and Francesco, Elizabeth and Tom, Francesco and Stefania, Francesca and Ben, Antonella, Grégoire and many others opened their homes to us, invited their friends, and gave us the opportunity to introduce LodenTal in the most natural way possible: through our clothes.

We arrive with a collection, we talk, we try things on.
A fabric is chosen, measurements are taken, a length or proportion is adjusted.
In the end, that coat no longer belongs to the collection. It belongs to the person who will wear it.

The season has already started and I’ll head overseas once again with coats, capes, jackets, fabrics and samples.
The meetings, fittings, measurements and conversations will begin again.
And in my suitcase there will still be the very thing that started it all in 2012: a loden coat.
